Akron Institute has been providing quality service for over 30 years. They have programs that include Allied Health, Information Technology, and Business Administration, which have helped their graduates become involved in rewarding and challenging careers locally.

Akron Institute of Herzing University is part of the Herzing Educational System, and it offers fourteen campuses in North America.

The Herzing University was among the first graduate schools created specifically to train students for careers in the computer and information fields. Since 1965, nine schools have evolved in the U.S., four in Canada and herzingonline.edu has provided an online presence.

Herzing continues to expand its campuses, and it has also increased its educational offerings to include such fields as public safety, electronics, health care, business management, and design. Credential levels were raised to include bachelor and associate programs at all its U.S. locations.

The school is nationally recognized for its community service activities and its managers and executives have been prominent in their respective areas.

As you continue your education, an issue that is important for you to think about is how you will pay for your education. Qualified applicants can receive financial aid and financing from Akron Institute.

Scholarships and Awards

Akron Institute High School Merit Scholarship

Students may qualify for a $500 Akron Institute High School Merit Scholarship if their entrance scores are in the upper one-third of the students accepted by Akron Institute in the prior year for that particular major. The Akron Institute application deadline for scholarships is August 1 of the year when the student will graduate. You must begin full time the year you graduate, at Akron Institute. An application for a high school merit scholarship for the Akron Institute may be obtained from the departments of financial aid or admissions. After submitting the application for the scholarship, we will let all applicants know the results within two weeks.

Adult Learner Scholarship

You can get an Adult Learner Scholarship each semester if you attend the Akron Institute and if you qualify. The Scholarship Selection Committee decides the scholarship amounts to be awarded for each semester. The scholarship will not be more than $700 each semester, for up to four semesters.

The applicant must meet these criteria:

  • Is not eligible for the Akron Institute High School Merit Scholarship;
  • Demonstrates the need for financial assistance;
  • Provides two written recommendations from employers or educators;
  • Submits a 150-300 word qualifying essay explaining why he/she is pursuing the field of study being applied for and why he/she chose Akron Institute
  • Is interviewed by the Institute's College Scholarship Selection Committee.

In order to qualify for the Adult Learner Scholarship for the beginning of a particular semester, applicants must submit a completed application along with recommendations and qualifying essay at least two weeks before the start of the first semester. If students miss this deadline, they can submit an application before their second semester starts, but no later.

Academic Award

Students will receive awards for being academically successful in regards to their GPA. If a student has a course schedule of 12 credit hours or more, they can credit the award to the next semester's tuition. You don't need to put in an application. The Department of Financial Aid will determine the amount of the award and inform students.

The Career Services Department works closely with each graduate providing the following assistance:

  • Readying students with job-seeking skills
  • Assisting students in developing a polished resume
  • Providing individual assistance during the job search process
  • Working with area employers to develop job leads and interviews
  • Providing valuable work experience through industry externships.

Industry Externships

The externship's primary purpose is to give each student opportunities to sharpen his or her vocational skills while gaining important experience in the industry. It also allows the company to assess the graduate's skills and abilities, and further allows them to easily part ways should the applicant not work out. Completion of the externship program leads straight to a permanent job for many of our graduates.

Associate of Applied Science in Computer Networking and Security Technology (AASCNST)

Students participating in this program will graduate with the knowledge and technical abilities that will enable them to be successful in an entry-level technical position in the computer network technology industry. Network administration, installation, administration, security, and support are some of the areas that may offer career opportunities.

Program Objectives

Here are some objectives that should be met at the end of the program. Students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the PC computer skills necessary for proper installation, configuration, administration and troubleshooting of hardware.
  • Demonstrate that he/she is able to install, configure, administer and troubleshoot functional network operating systems, infrastructure services, equipment (including wireless), security, and protocols.
  • Show the necessary techniques to administer client-server applications.
  • Write technical reports and other business communications that are clear and concise.
  • Show competencies in security procedures and methodologies.
  • Use mathematical analysis to understand the world, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, learn basic computer skills, and gain a basic understanding of human behavior in context of larger society.

Potential Job Position Titles

There are several titles of positions available once you're out of school, including Junior Network Support Specialist, Network Support Engineer, Junior Network Technician, Network Administrator, Junior Network Acquisition Coordinator, and Network Deployment Specialist.

Program Length

Students generally complete the program in five semesters (20 months) when taking a full course load.

Program Content

At least 79 credit hours are needed for graduation.

Akron Institute of Herzing University has two ways you can apply for admission. Online or in person applications at our campus are available. The interview with an admissions advisor is an essential element of the application process. They will provide important information for any requests you may have. They will also assess your aptitude and go over your previous education to be sure that you have all the necessary prerequisites for admission.
