Great Online Resources for a Web Developer

The computer industry in general is expected to continue to grow, and web development is one of its hottest fields.  This makes sense, especially considering the number of web-based businesses there are.  A considerable number of traditional companies are also increasing their online presence, and small businesses and personal websites continue to grow.  In different ways, these trends have influenced web design and the development arena.

One of the great things about working in web development is the fact that most of it can be done online, or at least away from the physical site of the client or job.  Admittedly, this has led to some jobs being shipped away to less-costly areas, but many web developers have turned even that trend to their advantage by going freelance – working for themselves, creating websites for clients on a contractual or job-by-job basis – or by starting a website development business.

Even for web developers who work as part of a team, it is important to stay current with the new trends and technology in the computer world.  Not only should they be aware of their particular field, but of the information technology industry as a whole.  What resources are there – for web development professionals and for those who may be interested in a career in website creation?

Resources for Beginning and Professional Web Developers

While many of the following websites are geared to a professional audience, they also contain valuable information for someone who is interested in learning more about this career.  [Please note:  some of these sites also contain online shopping (i.e. for books, web development kits, etc.)  These websites were chosen for the value of their information, not as secure shopping centers.  Use caution when buying over the web.]

  • About.com Web Design (webdesign.about.com).  Unlike some other online information sites, About.com offers guidance written by people who are knowledgeable in the subjects they cover, and the difference shows.  While this isn’t a site targeted towards professionals, it is a good way to get an overview of the web development field.  While design is stressed, it also features articles on programming in HTML, CSS, and EXML.  Career opportunities are also discussed.  For a more general view of computer topics, visit About.com Computing and Technology (www.about.com/computer).
  • Web Monkey (www.webmonkey.com).  An offshoot of the respected computer and Internet magazine Wired, this site is loaded with tools to help both professional web developers and newbies.  A comprehensive database of articles discusses everything from programming languages, standards, software, and security to browsers, platforms, and more.  The latest news and a reference page are also included.
  • A List Apart (www.alistapart.com).  This is an online magazine devoted to all things dealing with web development.  It comes out every Friday, and covers every topic: coding, web content, design, and more.
  • Web Reference (www.webreference.com).  Part of Internet information mega-site Internet.com, this site deals with the specifics of web development.  It includes a vast amount of archived white papers, eBooks, webcasts, articles, tutorials, and forums.  Web development kits are also available.
  • SitePoint (www.sitepoint.com).  This Australian site is marketed as one of the most-visited web development sites on the Internet.  In addition to browsing the usual reference pages, articles, and blogs, users can participate in forums, buy books and kits, or take in a tutorial.

At times, web development can be just as much about solving problems as it is about creating new sites.  Being able to access various online forums and article bases can often help untangle the snarl.  Whether the reader is a professional of many years’ experience or a beginner, much valuable information can be found visiting web development resource sites.
